Dr. Stephen Hochschuler

Dr. Stephen Hochschuler is an internationally recognized spine surgeon, innovator, and educator. He co-founded the Texas Back Institute in 1978, pioneering one of the nation’s first multidisciplinary spine centers. Over his career, he has advanced the field of spine care through leadership in clinical practice, research, and medical device innovation.

A graduate of Harvard Medical School and Columbia College, Dr. Hochschuler completed surgical training at Boston City Hospital and orthopedic residency at the University of Texas Southwestern. He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and textbooks that have shaped modern approaches to spine surgery.

Dr. Hochschuler has served as President and Chairman of leading professional societies, including the Spine Arthroplasty Society, and has held advisory roles with MIT’s Picower Institute, Arizona State University’s Biodesign Institute, and multiple medical technology companies. His clinical and entrepreneurial work has influenced the evolution of minimally invasive surgery, artificial disc technology, and comprehensive spine care models.
